Alpe d'Huez needs no introduction. It is one of the most legendary and well-known climbs in the world of cycling. Since 1952, the Tour de France has visited Alpe d'Huez more than 30 times, and the 21 iconic hairpin turns that spread over 13.8 km have become almost synonymous with the Tour de France.

Many of cycling's biggest stars have won at Alpe d'Huez. Fausto Coppi was the first to win on Alpe d'Huez in 1952. Since then cycling stars such as Bernard Hinault, Gianni Bugno, Marco Pantani, Carlos Sastre and Geraint Thomas have won on Alpe d'Huez too.

The fastest official time on Alpe d'Huez was set by Marco Pantani in 1995, when he climbed the 1,125 altitude meters in 36' 50". This corresponds to an average speed of 22.48km/h!

In addition to being frequently visited by the Tour de France, Alpe d'Huez is also a regular part of the well-known amateur race, La Marmotte, which ends at the top of the iconic climb.
