The Col de Portet is a relatively new climb in the Tour de France. The climb made its entrance in 2018, when the finish line was placed at the top. Here it was Nairo Quintana who became the first winner on the climb. Although the climb is new to the Tour de France, the climb is not easy at all. The Col de Portet has its summit at 2,215 meters and thereby it is the highest mountain pass in the French Pyrenees.

In terms of altitude, the Col du Portet has almost as many altitude meters as the Col du Tourmalet, but is slightly shorter and therefore steeper. With an average gradient of 8.7% over 16.1km, and a maximum gradient of 16.3%, the Col de Portet is a real steep climb. Climbfinder.com has named the climb the most difficult in the Pyrenees. Thus, there is probably no doubt that the Col du Portet will form the background for many future mountain finishes in the Tour de France.

Col de Portet facts:

  • Length: 16.1km
  • Avg. gradient : 8.7%
  • Maximum gradient: 16.3%
  • Total ascent: 1,390m
