La Planche des Belles Filles is a climb in the Vosges. In English, the name of the climb can be translated as "The beautiful girls' plank". The climb with the slightly strange name is a relatively new climb in the Tour de France. Since its introduction in 2012, when Chris Froome was the first rider to cross the finish line, the Tour has visited the climb a total of 6 times. The climb was also included in the 2022 edition of the Tour de France where Tadej Pogačar won in front of Jonas Vingegaard.

Despite its short Tour history, La Planche des Belles Filles has already laid asphalt (and gravel) for some extremely spectacular dramas. It was on this climb that Tadej Pogačar beat Primož Roglič in 2020 on the final decisive mountain time trial, thus winning his first Tour de France.

The climb goes by two names: La Planche des Belles Filles and La Super Planche des Belles Filles. Both names cover the same climb, but the Tour has had stage finishes in two different places on the climb. The most used in the Tour de France is La Planche des Belles Filles, where you finish at a height of 1,042 metres above sea level. However, it is possible to end the climb 1km further up the mountain. On the extra kilometre, the climb increases approx. 100 meters in height and the road also turns into gravel road. In addition, on this part there are some extremely steep passages, where the maximum gradient reaches 24%! It is therefore not without reason that the climb is called La "Super" Planche des Belles Filles

La Super Planche des Belles Filles facts:

  • Length: 7km
  • Avg. gradient: 8.7%
  • Maximum gradient: 24%
  • Total ascent: 612m
