Mont Ventoux is, together with Alpe d'Huez, one of the most iconic climbs in the cycling world. The large limestone desert that covers the last 6km to the top gives Mont Ventoux its distinctive character. That is why Mont Ventoux is also known as "The Bald Mountain". Because of the mountain's desert landscape it can be very windy on the climb, which can pose an extra challenge when climbing the climb by bike.

Mont Ventoux is regularly used by major cycling races such as the Tour de France, Critérium du Dauphiné, Paris-Nice and Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge. The Tour de France has visited Mont Ventoux 16 times since 1951, and the climb has paved the way for countless historic cycling moments. One of the more tragic events took place on 13 July 1967 during the Tour de France, when the English cyclist Tom Simpson fell off his bike approx. 1.5km before the summit and died as a result of a mixture between amphetamines, alcohol and overheating. A memorial has been erected in his honor.

Unlike Alpe d'Huez, which can only be climbed by one route, Mont Ventoux can be climbed by three routes. The hardest and most famous goes from Bédoin. This poster illustrates the profile of the climb from Bédoin.
