With its 2,757 meters above sea level, Passo dello Stelvio or Stilfser Joch in German, is the second highest paved mountain pass in the Alps. The climb is only surpassed by the French Col de I'Iseran with a mere 7 metres. There's no getting around it – the Passo dello Stelvio is a monster! With its length of 24.1km and an average gradient of 7.6%, the Stelvio is made to create spectacular bike races. Despite this, the climb has 'only' been visited by Gio d'Italia 13 times since 1953, when the climb was introduced for the first time.

Fausto Coppi was the first rider to cross the Passo dello Stelvio in 1953, and has thus given name to the term "Cima Coppi", which is assigned to the climbs that makes up the highest point of the Giro d'Italia from year to year.

Every year "Stelvio Bike Day" is held, where the climb is closed to motorized traffic on both sides of the climb. If you plan to climb Stelvio by bike, then this is a great day to do it.

Passo dello Stelvio can be climbed from two sides. This poster illustrates the profile of the climb from Prato, which is described as the hardest of the two ascents.

Passo dello Stelvio facts:

  • Length: 24.1 km
  • Avg. gradient: 7.6%
  • Maximum gradient: 13.7%
  • Total ascent: 1,832m
